Tsongkhapa
(1357-1419)

Great scholar, meditation master, and reformer, Tsongkhapa is amongst the most influential figures in Tibetan Buddhism. He is said to be the incarnation of Manjushri—who is accompanied by the sword of wisdom that cuts away ignorance, and the Prajnaparamita text. Tsongkhapa founded the Gelug tradition based on Nagarjuna’s Middle Way, in which His Holiness the Dalai Lama was initially trained.

Tsongkhapa’s early teaching was in the Sakyapa And Kadampa schools. He is regarded as Tibet’s greatest philosopher. He also founded influential monasteries in Tibet such as Drepung, Sera, and Ganden. His two principal written works are the Great Discourse on the Stages of the Path to Enlightenment (Lamrin Chenmo)—one of the principal texts of Mahayana Buddhism—and the Great Discourse on the Secret Mantra (Ngagrim Chenmo).
