The Elephant-headed god, Ganesha, is known as the Remover of Obstacles and Lord of Beginnings. As the god of good fortune, his name is traditionally invoked before the start of any new enterprise or journey. Weddings and other beginnings are blessed by him, including the new year. His enormous belly symbolises his embodiment of a successful and prosperous life . Ganesha is also regarded as the patron of business and is the protector of knowledge, literature and education. As the god of Wisdom, he is the patron saint of students who pray to him to pass their exams. Ganesha is the offspring of the goddess Parvati, the consort of Shiva.
